4	4	Garland Hartman
5	5	WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
6	6	commemorates the life of Garland Hartman, who died February 8,
7	7	2017, at the age of 100; and
8	8	WHEREAS, Garland Hartman was born on May 25, 1916, in
9	9	Battle Ground, Indiana, to Benjamin and Estella Hartman; he grew
10	10	up in the farming country of northwest Indiana, where he was a
11	11	standout high school baseball player, and he went on to earn a
12	12	degree from Purdue University; and
13	13	WHEREAS, He had begun a career as a pharmacist, but the
14	14	imminent onset of World War II inspired him to join the United
15	15	States Army; he served in the Pacific theater and in postwar
16	16	Germany, where he worked for the United Nations Relief and
17	17	Rehabilitation Administration; he went on to serve in the Korean
18	18	War and in other postings until his retirement in 1967 with the
19	19	rank of captain; and
20	20	WHEREAS, While serving in Germany, he met and married the
21	21	late Erika Becker, and the couple enjoyed many decades of
22	22	marriage together; they were blessed with two children who were a
23	23	source of much pride and comfort for him; and
24	24	WHEREAS, After his military service, he returned to civilian
25	25	life as a hospital pharmacist; the family lived in Vermont for
26	26	nearly 20 years before returning to settle in Texas; and
27	27	WHEREAS, A man of loyalty, courage, and compassion, he gave
28	28	unselfishly to others, and he was noted for his love of animals,
29	29	language and literature, and sports; he faced adversity with
30	30	strength and stoicism, and his enthusiasm for living each day to
31	31	the fullest will not be forgotten by those who were privileged to
32	32	share in his life; and
33	33	WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and
34	34	grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
35	35	forever by his family and friends; now, therefore, be it
36	36	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
37	37	Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
38	38	family of Garland Hartman; and, be it further
39	39	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
40	40	his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
41	41	Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
42	42	memory of Garland Hartman.
