55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Garland Hartman, who died February 8,
77 2017, at the age of 100; and
88 WHEREAS, Garland Hartman was born on May 25, 1916, in
99 Battle Ground, Indiana, to Benjamin and Estella Hartman; he grew
1010 up in the farming country of northwest Indiana, where he was a
1111 standout high school baseball player, and he went on to earn a
1212 degree from Purdue University; and
1313 WHEREAS, He had begun a career as a pharmacist, but the
1414 imminent onset of World War II inspired him to join the United
1515 States Army; he served in the Pacific theater and in postwar
1616 Germany, where he worked for the United Nations Relief and
1717 Rehabilitation Administration; he went on to serve in the Korean
1818 War and in other postings until his retirement in 1967 with the
1919 rank of captain; and
2020 WHEREAS, While serving in Germany, he met and married the
2121 late Erika Becker, and the couple enjoyed many decades of
2222 marriage together; they were blessed with two children who were a
2323 source of much pride and comfort for him; and
2424 WHEREAS, After his military service, he returned to civilian
2525 life as a hospital pharmacist; the family lived in Vermont for
2626 nearly 20 years before returning to settle in Texas; and
2727 WHEREAS, A man of loyalty, courage, and compassion, he gave
2828 unselfishly to others, and he was noted for his love of animals,
2929 language and literature, and sports; he faced adversity with
3030 strength and stoicism, and his enthusiasm for living each day to
3131 the fullest will not be forgotten by those who were privileged to
3232 share in his life; and
3333 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and
3434 grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured
3535 forever by his family and friends; now, therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
3737 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3838 family of Garland Hartman; and, be it further
3939 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4040 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4141 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4242 memory of Garland Hartman.
