SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 348 In Memory of Garland Hartman WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and commemorates the life of Garland Hartman, who died February 8, 2017, at the age of 100; and WHEREAS, Garland Hartman was born on May 25, 1916, in Battle Ground, Indiana, to Benjamin and Estella Hartman; he grew up in the farming country of northwest Indiana, where he was a standout high school baseball player, and he went on to earn a degree from Purdue University; and WHEREAS, He had begun a career as a pharmacist, but the imminent onset of World War II inspired him to join the United States Army; he served in the Pacific theater and in postwar Germany, where he worked for the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration; he went on to serve in the Korean War and in other postings until his retirement in 1967 with the rank of captain; and WHEREAS, While serving in Germany, he met and married the late Erika Becker, and the couple enjoyed many decades of marriage together; they were blessed with two children who were a source of much pride and comfort for him; and WHEREAS, After his military service, he returned to civilian life as a hospital pharmacist; the family lived in Vermont for nearly 20 years before returning to settle in Texas; and WHEREAS, A man of loyalty, courage, and compassion, he gave unselfishly to others, and he was noted for his love of animals, language and literature, and sports; he faced adversity with strength and stoicism, and his enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be forgotten by those who were privileged to share in his life; and WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by his family and friends; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved family of Garland Hartman; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Garland Hartman.
