2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

3 | 3 | | recognize John Treviño, a pioneering community leader and a |
---|
4 | 4 | | beloved resident of Austin who has dedicated his life to serving |
---|
5 | 5 | | others; and |
---|
6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, John Treviño's life of public service began at the |
---|
7 | 7 | | age of eight, when he volunteered as an altar boy in the Roman |
---|
8 | 8 | | Catholic Diocese of Austin; at the age of 17, he joined the United |
---|
9 | 9 | | States Army, and he served for three years in the 82nd Airborne |
---|
10 | 10 | | Division; upon returning to Austin, he took an active role in the |
---|
11 | 11 | | Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, and in 1965, he was chosen to |
---|
12 | 12 | | serve as the first director of Austin's Community Action Program, |
---|
13 | 13 | | a federal anti-poverty initiative; and |
---|
14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, In 1973, Mr. Treviño was one of 25 prominent |
---|
15 | 15 | | Hispanic leaders to form the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of |
---|
16 | 16 | | Commerce, and two years later, he became the first Hispanic to be |
---|
17 | 17 | | elected to the Austin City Council; during his 13 years with the |
---|
18 | 18 | | council, he worked diligently to increase opportunities for |
---|
19 | 19 | | women and minorities, and he led efforts to establish clinics |
---|
20 | 20 | | throughout the city that connected poor and vulnerable citizens |
---|
21 | 21 | | to quality health care options; and |
---|
22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Treviño became the first Hispanic mayor pro |
---|
23 | 23 | | tempore of Austin in 1978, and he served as the city's first |
---|
24 | 24 | | Hispanic mayor for three months in 1983, when Mayor Carole Keeton |
---|
25 | 25 | | McClellan resigned to accept a state board appointment; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, John Treviño is a distinguished public servant |
---|
27 | 27 | | and an admired civic leader who has dedicated his life to the |
---|
28 | 28 | | betterment of his community; he has been a proactive force for |
---|
29 | 29 | | equality and a champion of the poor and underserved, and he is |
---|
30 | 30 | | indeed deserving of recognition for his outstanding work on |
---|
31 | 31 | | behalf of his fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it |
---|
32 | 32 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
---|
33 | 33 | | Legislature, hereby commend John Treviño on his exemplary life of |
---|
34 | 34 | | service and extend to him best wishes in all his future |
---|
35 | 35 | | endeavors; and, be it further |
---|
36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

37 | 37 | | him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
