11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 394
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 recognize John Treviño, a pioneering community leader and a
44 beloved resident of Austin who has dedicated his life to serving
55 others; and
66 WHEREAS, John Treviño's life of public service began at the
77 age of eight, when he volunteered as an altar boy in the Roman
88 Catholic Diocese of Austin; at the age of 17, he joined the United
99 States Army, and he served for three years in the 82nd Airborne
1010 Division; upon returning to Austin, he took an active role in the
1111 Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, and in 1965, he was chosen to
1212 serve as the first director of Austin's Community Action Program,
1313 a federal anti-poverty initiative; and
1414 WHEREAS, In 1973, Mr. Treviño was one of 25 prominent
1515 Hispanic leaders to form the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of
1616 Commerce, and two years later, he became the first Hispanic to be
1717 elected to the Austin City Council; during his 13 years with the
1818 council, he worked diligently to increase opportunities for
1919 women and minorities, and he led efforts to establish clinics
2020 throughout the city that connected poor and vulnerable citizens
2121 to quality health care options; and
2222 WHEREAS, Mr. Treviño became the first Hispanic mayor pro
2323 tempore of Austin in 1978, and he served as the city's first
2424 Hispanic mayor for three months in 1983, when Mayor Carole Keeton
2525 McClellan resigned to accept a state board appointment; and
2626 WHEREAS, John Treviño is a distinguished public servant
2727 and an admired civic leader who has dedicated his life to the
2828 betterment of his community; he has been a proactive force for
2929 equality and a champion of the poor and underserved, and he is
3030 indeed deserving of recognition for his outstanding work on
3131 behalf of his fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it
3232 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
3333 Legislature, hereby commend John Treviño on his exemplary life of
3434 service and extend to him best wishes in all his future
3535 endeavors; and, be it further
3636 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
3737 him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
