SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 394 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize John Treviño, a pioneering community leader and a beloved resident of Austin who has dedicated his life to serving others; and WHEREAS, John Treviño's life of public service began at the age of eight, when he volunteered as an altar boy in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Austin; at the age of 17, he joined the United States Army, and he served for three years in the 82nd Airborne Division; upon returning to Austin, he took an active role in the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul, and in 1965, he was chosen to serve as the first director of Austin's Community Action Program, a federal anti-poverty initiative; and WHEREAS, In 1973, Mr. Treviño was one of 25 prominent Hispanic leaders to form the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and two years later, he became the first Hispanic to be elected to the Austin City Council; during his 13 years with the council, he worked diligently to increase opportunities for women and minorities, and he led efforts to establish clinics throughout the city that connected poor and vulnerable citizens to quality health care options; and WHEREAS, Mr. Treviño became the first Hispanic mayor pro tempore of Austin in 1978, and he served as the city's first Hispanic mayor for three months in 1983, when Mayor Carole Keeton McClellan resigned to accept a state board appointment; and WHEREAS, John Treviño is a distinguished public servant and an admired civic leader who has dedicated his life to the betterment of his community; he has been a proactive force for equality and a champion of the poor and underserved, and he is indeed deserving of recognition for his outstanding work on behalf of his fellow citizens; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby commend John Treviño on his exemplary life of service and extend to him best wishes in all his future endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
