11 SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 408
22 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
33 join Texans across the state in celebrating the Girl Scout Cookie
44 Program and March 13, 2017, as Girl Scout Legislative Day; and
55 WHEREAS, The year 2017 marks the 100th anniversary of what
66 has become the largest entrepreneurial training program for
77 girls in the world, the Girl Scout Cookie Program; the first
88 known sale of cookies by Girl Scouts occurred in 1917, when the
99 Mistletoe Troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma, baked cookies and sold
1010 them in a high school cafeteria as a service project; and
1111 WHEREAS, The Girl Scout Cookie Program teaches young women
1212 five essential entrepreneurial skills; Girl Scouts learn about
1313 goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills,
1414 and business ethics; in keeping with the Girl Scout mission of
1515 preparing girls for the future, the program has launched Digital
1616 Cookie, an online initiative through which girls learn such
1717 modern technological skills as e-marketing, digital money
1818 management, and online dashboard usage; and
1919 WHEREAS, Over the last 100 years, proceeds from the sale of
2020 Girl Scout cookies have gone to support a wide range of worthy
2121 causes, while helping girls learn valuable business techniques
2222 that will be useful as they face the challenges of an
2323 ever-changing society; and
2424 WHEREAS, Girl Scout cookies have become an important part of the
2525 fabric of life in communities across the nation, and it is truly fitting
2626 that this exceptional tradition receive special recognition; and
2727 WHEREAS, As part of Girl Scout Legislative Day, the Girl
2828 Scouts of Texas have stated that all of the woman senators in the
2929 Texas Senate be considered members of the special Girl Scout
3030 Honorary Troop 1920, which is named in tribute to the year women
3131 were granted the right to vote; now, therefore, be it
3232 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
3333 Legislature, hereby congratulate the Girl Scouts on the 100th
3434 year of the Girl Scout Cookie Program and extend best wishes to
3535 all for a memorable Girl Scout Legislative Day; and, be it further
3636 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared in
3737 honor of this special occasion.
