44 Rudolph P. Miller Jr.
55 WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever treasure their
66 memories of Dr. Rudolph P. Miller Jr. of Plano, who died on
77 February 3, 2017, at the age of 90; and
88 WHEREAS, Rudy Miller was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
99 to Rudolph P. Miller Sr. and Alice Rose Scott Smithson Miller; an
1010 Eagle Scout as a boy, he answered his nation's call to duty during
1111 World War II and bravely served with the United States Marine Corps
1212 in the Pacific theater, earning a Purple Heart for his service in
1313 the battle for Okinawa; and
1414 WHEREAS, After the war, Mr. Miller earned a bachelor's
1515 degree from Millersville University, a master's degree from
1616 Temple University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh,
1717 and he then embarked on a long and successful career as an
1818 educator; initially serving as a public school teacher and
1919 administrator, he went on to distinguish himself on the faculties
2020 of Ohio University and the University of Memphis, and he retired
2121 as a professor emeritus from East Tennessee State University,
2222 where a former student endowed a scholarship in his and another
2323 faculty member's honor; and
2424 WHEREAS, Dr. Miller was married to Iris Troutman Miller
2525 for 65 years, and he was the proud father of two children, Pam and
2626 Scott; later in life, he was blessed with three grandchildren,
2727 Katie, Ashlee, and Chris, and three great-grandchildren, Dylan,
2828 Addison, and Abigail; in retirement in Plano, he was active with
2929 the YMCA and a valued member of Saint Andrew United Methodist
3030 Church; and
3131 WHEREAS, Though it is impossible to gauge the full effect
3232 of one person's life, some individuals leave their unmistakable
3333 mark on the world as they move through it, and Rudy Miller's
3434 contributions will long resonate in the lives of all who knew
3535 him; now, therefore, be it
3636 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
3737 Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. Rudolph
3838 P. Miller Jr. and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and
3939 many friends; and, be it further
4040 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4141 his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this day, it do
4242 so in memory of Rudy Miller.
