| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever treasure their |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | memories of Dr. Rudolph P. Miller Jr. of Plano, who died on |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | February 3, 2017, at the age of 90; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Rudy Miller was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | to Rudolph P. Miller Sr. and Alice Rose Scott Smithson Miller; an |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Eagle Scout as a boy, he answered his nation's call to duty during |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | World War II and bravely served with the United States Marine Corps |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | in the Pacific theater, earning a Purple Heart for his service in |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | the battle for Okinawa; and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, After the war, Mr. Miller earned a bachelor's |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | degree from Millersville University, a master's degree from |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | Temple University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | and he then embarked on a long and successful career as an |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | educator; initially serving as a public school teacher and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | administrator, he went on to distinguish himself on the faculties |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | of Ohio University and the University of Memphis, and he retired |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | as a professor emeritus from East Tennessee State University, |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | where a former student endowed a scholarship in his and another |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | faculty member's honor; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Miller was married to Iris Troutman Miller |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | for 65 years, and he was the proud father of two children, Pam and |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Scott; later in life, he was blessed with three grandchildren, |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Katie, Ashlee, and Chris, and three great-grandchildren, Dylan, |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Addison, and Abigail; in retirement in Plano, he was active with |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | the YMCA and a valued member of Saint Andrew United Methodist |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Church; and |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Though it is impossible to gauge the full effect |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | of one person's life, some individuals leave their unmistakable |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | mark on the world as they move through it, and Rudy Miller's |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | contributions will long resonate in the lives of all who knew |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | him; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. Rudolph |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | P. Miller Jr. and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | many friends; and, be it further |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

| 41 | 41 | | his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this day, it do |
