| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | join the citizens of Upshur County in celebrating Upshur County |

| 4 | 4 | | Days at the State Capitol on March 27 and 28, 2017; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Upshur County was established by the First Texas |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | Legislature on April 27, 1846, and two years later, voters |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | selected the location for Gilmer, the county seat; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Over the years, Upshur County has developed a |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | thriving and diverse economy with many successful industries, |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | including mining, quarrying, oil and gas extraction, agriculture, |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | forestry, hunting, and fishing; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, The county is known for the East Texas Yamboree, |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | which draws thousands of tourists to Gilmer every year; the annual |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | four-day festival harks back to a time when sweet potatoes, known |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | colloquially as yams, were among the state's major cash crops; the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | event includes parades, a barn dance, a pageant, livestock shows, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | and a marching contest; and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Upshur County is a true gem of East Texas and a |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | fine place in which to live, work, and play; residents can indeed |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | look forward to the future while embracing the county's rich and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | colorful past; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Upshur County for |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | their many contributions to the growth and progress of this state |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | and extend to them best wishes for a memorable celebration of |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Upshur County Days; and, be it further |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | the county as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
