SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 511 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to join the citizens of Upshur County in celebrating Upshur County Days at the State Capitol on March 27 and 28, 2017; and WHEREAS, Upshur County was established by the First Texas Legislature on April 27, 1846, and two years later, voters selected the location for Gilmer, the county seat; and WHEREAS, Over the years, Upshur County has developed a thriving and diverse economy with many successful industries, including mining, quarrying, oil and gas extraction, agriculture, forestry, hunting, and fishing; and WHEREAS, The county is known for the East Texas Yamboree, which draws thousands of tourists to Gilmer every year; the annual four-day festival harks back to a time when sweet potatoes, known colloquially as yams, were among the state's major cash crops; the event includes parades, a barn dance, a pageant, livestock shows, and a marching contest; and WHEREAS, Upshur County is a true gem of East Texas and a fine place in which to live, work, and play; residents can indeed look forward to the future while embracing the county's rich and colorful past; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby commend the citizens of Upshur County for their many contributions to the growth and progress of this state and extend to them best wishes for a memorable celebration of Upshur County Days; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the county as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
