| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Michael J. Sorrell for 10 years of exemplary leadership |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | as the 34th president of Paul Quinn College; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Established in 1872, Paul Quinn College is the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | oldest historically black college west of the Mississippi River; |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | today, the school excels in its mission of providing a quality, |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | faith-based education that addresses the academic, social, and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | Christian development of students and prepares them to be agents |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | of change in the global marketplace; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, Michael Sorrell stepped in as president of Paul |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | Quinn College in 2007, at a time when the school was facing |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | hardships; in his 10 years of leadership, he has implemented |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | numerous financial and educational initiatives that have helped |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | the college recover from years of struggle and become nationally |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | renowned for its innovative approach to higher learning; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, During President Sorrell's tenure, Paul Quinn |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | College has earned a reputation for excellence among historically |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | black colleges and universities; the school has been honored as |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | an HBCU of the Year, and its Student Government Association and |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | business degree program have been recognized as model HBCU |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | programs; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, President Sorrell is a distinguished leader and, |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | among numerous other commendations, is the only two-time recipient |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | of the HBCU Male President of the Year Award; he has guided Paul |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | Quinn College to a decade of immense progress while honoring the |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | same principles that the institution was founded on more than 145 |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | years ago; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature, hereby commend Michael J. Sorrell for his 10 years |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | of outstanding leadership at Paul Quinn College and extend to him |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
