SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 528 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Michael J. Sorrell for 10 years of exemplary leadership as the 34th president of Paul Quinn College; and WHEREAS, Established in 1872, Paul Quinn College is the oldest historically black college west of the Mississippi River; today, the school excels in its mission of providing a quality, faith-based education that addresses the academic, social, and Christian development of students and prepares them to be agents of change in the global marketplace; and WHEREAS, Michael Sorrell stepped in as president of Paul Quinn College in 2007, at a time when the school was facing hardships; in his 10 years of leadership, he has implemented numerous financial and educational initiatives that have helped the college recover from years of struggle and become nationally renowned for its innovative approach to higher learning; and WHEREAS, During President Sorrell's tenure, Paul Quinn College has earned a reputation for excellence among historically black colleges and universities; the school has been honored as an HBCU of the Year, and its Student Government Association and business degree program have been recognized as model HBCU programs; and WHEREAS, President Sorrell is a distinguished leader and, among numerous other commendations, is the only two-time recipient of the HBCU Male President of the Year Award; he has guided Paul Quinn College to a decade of immense progress while honoring the same principles that the institution was founded on more than 145 years ago; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby commend Michael J. Sorrell for his 10 years of outstanding leadership at Paul Quinn College and extend to him best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
