SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 651
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the City of Georgetown on the 20th anniversary of its
designation as a Great American Main Street City; and
WHEREAS, In 1997, Georgetown became the first Texas city in
state history to be named a Great American Main Street City, the
highest and most prestigious honor bestowed by the National Trust
for Historic Preservation's National Main Street Center; and
WHEREAS, The Main Street program emphasizes the economic
development, organization, quality design, and promotion of
downtown districts; Georgetown was honored for its dedication to
maintaining a vital downtown business district despite the
demands of rapid growth; and
WHEREAS, The City of Georgetown and Williamson County
governments invested heavily into the town center and into
revitalizing historic downtown buildings, and with the help of
private contributions, the city was able to build a diversified
and thriving central business district that continues to
contribute to a robust local economy and a successful tourism
industry; and
WHEREAS, Georgetown's designation as a Great American Main
Street City is a reflection of the vision, leadership, and
volunteer efforts of citizens and local administrators, and
their efforts to preserve the town's unique history and beauty
will continue to benefit residents and visitors for generations
to come; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
Legislature, hereby congratulate the citizens and civic leaders
of Georgetown on the 20th anniversary of their city's designation
as a Great American Main Street City and extend to all best wishes
for the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the city as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
