| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize San Jacinto College for being honored as one of the |

| 4 | 4 | | nation's top five community colleges by Aspen Institute's College |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | Excellence Program; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | is the signature recognition of high achievement and performance |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | among community colleges in the United States; San Jacinto |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | College was honored with an Aspen Prize Rising Star award for its |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | success in several areas, including student academic |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | performance, degree and college completion rates, job placement, |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | and minority and low-income student accomplishment; this |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | prestigious award distinguishes the school as a top five |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | institution among more than 1,000 community colleges across the |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | country; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, San Jacinto College has been a leader in higher |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | education in Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast region since 1961; |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | the school has gained widespread recognition for its progressive |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | approach to student learning and for implementing innovative |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | programs that focus on helping students to succeed and on |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | lowering the costs of continuing education; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Over the last 10 years, San Jacinto College has |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | experienced a dramatic increase in the number of degrees and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | certificates awarded to students; the school has also helped |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | students excel in the labor market by establishing beneficial |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | partnerships with local businesses and by aligning program |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | learning outcomes to industry standards; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Whether preparing students to continue their |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | higher education path or to meet the demands of a changing |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | marketplace, the educators and administrators at San Jacinto |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | College are committed to ensuring the long-term success of their |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | students; they can indeed take pride in their outstanding |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | accomplishments; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | Legislature, hereby extend congratulations to the |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | administrators, faculty, staff, and students of San Jacinto |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | College on being named among the top five community colleges in |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | the nation and proclaim April 25, 2017, San Jacinto College Day |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | at the Capitol; and, be it further |

| 40 | 40 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
