SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 654
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize San Jacinto College for being honored as one of the
nation's top five community colleges by Aspen Institute's College
Excellence Program; and
WHEREAS, The Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence
is the signature recognition of high achievement and performance
among community colleges in the United States; San Jacinto
College was honored with an Aspen Prize Rising Star award for its
success in several areas, including student academic
performance, degree and college completion rates, job placement,
and minority and low-income student accomplishment; this
prestigious award distinguishes the school as a top five
institution among more than 1,000 community colleges across the
country; and
WHEREAS, San Jacinto College has been a leader in higher
education in Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast region since 1961;
the school has gained widespread recognition for its progressive
approach to student learning and for implementing innovative
programs that focus on helping students to succeed and on
lowering the costs of continuing education; and
WHEREAS, Over the last 10 years, San Jacinto College has
experienced a dramatic increase in the number of degrees and
certificates awarded to students; the school has also helped
students excel in the labor market by establishing beneficial
partnerships with local businesses and by aligning program
learning outcomes to industry standards; and
WHEREAS, Whether preparing students to continue their
higher education path or to meet the demands of a changing
marketplace, the educators and administrators at San Jacinto
College are committed to ensuring the long-term success of their
students; they can indeed take pride in their outstanding
accomplishments; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
Legislature, hereby extend congratulations to the
administrators, faculty, staff, and students of San Jacinto
College on being named among the top five community colleges in
the nation and proclaim April 25, 2017, San Jacinto College Day
at the Capitol; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
the college as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
