SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 717
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to welcome
Ariana Jones, the reigning Feria de las Flores queen, and the
contestants of the 2017 Scholarship Pageant to the Capitol; and
WHEREAS, The pageant has been sponsored by the League of
United Latin American Citizens Council Number 1 since 1959;
through the years, the council has relied on the generosity and
support of the South Texas business community and has raised more
than $1 million in scholarship funds for students from the
Coastal Bend region; and
WHEREAS, This outstanding event pays tribute to the heritage
of Mexican American citizens and features music, dance, and dress
that exemplify the various regions of our state's neighbor to the
south; contestants in the pageant are judged on their performance
in the categories of beauty, personality, poise, costume, dance
routine, and onstage question; and
WHEREAS, Joining last year's winner, Ariana Jones, are the
talented contestants in this year's pageant: Victoria Morin,
Mireya Medina, Megan Lopez, Corina Alegria, Desney Torres,
Katherine Flores, Valeria Arredondo, Antoinette Castillo, Kelly
Flores, Mikayla Mondragon, Camryn Caylor, and Roslyn Jimenez; and
WHEREAS, These young women have demonstrated great cultural
pride and community spirit through their participation in this
exemplary event, and it is truly fitting that they receive special
recognition; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
Legislature, hereby commend the reigning queen of Feria de las
Flores, Ariana Jones, and the contestants of the 2017 Scholarship
Pageant on their hard work and extend to them a sincere welcome to
the Capitol; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
them as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
