                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 719
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 recognize Bertha A. Lucio Caballero, who is retiring from
 Dr. Arnulfo L. Oliveira Middle School after a distinguished
 career in education that has spanned nearly 50 years; and
 WHEREAS, Bertie Caballero began teaching in 1967 at
 Central Jr. High School in Brownsville; over the years, she has
 taught in Texas, Connecticut, California, and New York, and she
 is retiring as the eighth-grade lead English teacher at Oliveira
 Middle School in Brownsville after 37 years of service; her
 career at the school has included serving for 14 years as chair of
 the English department; and
 WHEREAS, Bertie Caballero has helped promote a culture of
 success at Oliveira Middle School through her commitment to the
 teaching profession and her extensive volunteerism; she has
 contributed to an array of campus and district committees and has
 represented the school at numerous state functions and
 superintendent councils, and she played an integral role in
 bringing academic team teaching to Brownsville middle schools;
 she has helped foster a spirit of civic responsibility in her
 students by initiating classroom projects that benefit local
 charities; and
 WHEREAS, A beloved and highly respected educator, Bertie
 Caballero has gained widespread recognition for her work on
 behalf of the students and the communities of the Rio Grande
 Valley; she has been honored for excellence by numerous
 publications, businesses, and civic groups, and she was named the
 Outstanding Teacher of the Year for the Region One Service Center
 for the 1999-2000 school year; and
 WHEREAS, Throughout her career, Bertie Caballero has
 exemplified the highest ideals of her profession; she has been a
 positive influence in the lives of countless young citizens, and
 her presence at Dr. Arnulfo L. Oliveira Middle School will be
 greatly missed; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
 Legislature, hereby commend Bertha A. Lucio Caballero on her
 outstanding career in education and her many contributions to the
 Rio Grande Valley and extend to her best wishes in all her future
 endeavors; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
 her as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
