SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 752 WHEREAS, Members of the Texas Podiatric Medical Association are celebrating the 100th anniversary of the organization's founding on June 24, 2017; and WHEREAS, The TPMA traces its origins back to October 22, 1917, when the Texas Chiropodist Society held its first organized meeting; in 1923, the 38th Texas Legislature passed a bill adding the practice of chiropody, now known as podiatry, to the Medical Practice Act, and in 1939, the State of Texas began independently licensing chiropodists; and WHEREAS, The organization adopted the Texas Podiatric Medical Association as its name in 1986; today, its membership includes more than 680 doctors of podiatric medicine, or podiatrists, who are uniquely qualified to diagnose and treat conditions affecting the foot and ankle; the care that they provide to Texas patients can reduce hospitalizations and save millions of dollars in medical costs, and their services are of crucial importance to diabetic patients with complications of the lower extremities; and WHEREAS, For a century, the Texas Podiatric Medical Association has advanced the interests and standard of care of a medical profession that is vital to the well-being of countless Texans, and it is a pleasure for the Senate to join the association in recognizing this special milestone in its history; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby honor the Texas Podiatric Medical Association on its centennial celebration and commend the men and women of this exemplary organization for their important work; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the Texas Podiatric Medical Association as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
