| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | citizens of Lewisville in mourning the loss of Marjory Kent |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Vickery, who died on May 4, 2017, at the age of 90; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Marjory Vickery was born on July 13, 1926; she |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | shaped a life of purpose as a champion of education, and she |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | enriched the lives of others by her warmth, her humor, and her |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Marjory graduated from Southern Methodist |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | University and became a world traveler and a trailblazing citizen |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | of the Lewisville community; she was the first woman to be |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | elected to serve on the board of the Lewisville Independent |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | School District; she was later the first Republican woman to be |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | elected to the Texas State Board of Education, and with that |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | victory, she also became the first Republican in Denton County to |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | be elected to state office; and |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Vickery is noted for playing a key role in |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | developing vital student safety measures, such as implementing |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | speed limits in school zones and assigning crossing guards at |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | designated sidewalks; she also worked with the Lewisville |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Independent School District Education Foundation to increase |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | funding for students and teachers; in 2003, Vickery Elementary |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | School opened its doors in honor of her many years of exceptional |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | work on behalf of the school district; and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | WHEREAS, Mrs. Vickery shared 63 years of marriage with the |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | late Paul Byron Vickery, and their loving relationship and |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | happiness served as an example for their five children, their six |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | grandchildren, and their six great-grandchildren; and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | WHEREAS, Marjory Vickery was a treasured Texan who was |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | respected and admired for her tireless work on behalf of young |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | citizens; she was recognized on numerous occasions for her many |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | contributions to her community, and she leaves behind memories |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | that will long be cherished by all who were privileged to share in |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | her life; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | family of Marjory Kent Vickery; and, be it further |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | family as an expression of deepest sympathy fromtheTexasSenate |
