55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
66 citizens of Lewisville in mourning the loss of Marjory Kent
77 Vickery, who died on May 4, 2017, at the age of 90; and
88 WHEREAS, Marjory Vickery was born on July 13, 1926; she
99 shaped a life of purpose as a champion of education, and she
1010 enriched the lives of others by her warmth, her humor, and her
1111 enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest; and
1212 WHEREAS, Marjory graduated from Southern Methodist
1313 University and became a world traveler and a trailblazing citizen
1414 of the Lewisville community; she was the first woman to be
1515 elected to serve on the board of the Lewisville Independent
1616 School District; she was later the first Republican woman to be
1717 elected to the Texas State Board of Education, and with that
1818 victory, she also became the first Republican in Denton County to
1919 be elected to state office; and
2020 WHEREAS, Mrs. Vickery is noted for playing a key role in
2121 developing vital student safety measures, such as implementing
2222 speed limits in school zones and assigning crossing guards at
2323 designated sidewalks; she also worked with the Lewisville
2424 Independent School District Education Foundation to increase
2525 funding for students and teachers; in 2003, Vickery Elementary
2626 School opened its doors in honor of her many years of exceptional
2727 work on behalf of the school district; and
2828 WHEREAS, Mrs. Vickery shared 63 years of marriage with the
2929 late Paul Byron Vickery, and their loving relationship and
3030 happiness served as an example for their five children, their six
3131 grandchildren, and their six great-grandchildren; and
3232 WHEREAS, Marjory Vickery was a treasured Texan who was
3333 respected and admired for her tireless work on behalf of young
3434 citizens; she was recognized on numerous occasions for her many
3535 contributions to her community, and she leaves behind memories
3636 that will long be cherished by all who were privileged to share in
3737 her life; now, therefore, be it
3838 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
3939 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
4040 family of Marjory Kent Vickery; and, be it further
4141 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her
4242 family as an expression of deepest sympathy fromtheTexasSenate
4343 and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
4444 Marjory Vickery.
