                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 782
 In Memory
 of
 Marjory Kent Vickery
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas joins the
 citizens of Lewisville in mourning the loss of Marjory Kent
 Vickery, who died on May 4, 2017, at the age of 90; and
 WHEREAS, Marjory Vickery was born on July 13, 1926; she
 shaped a life of purpose as a champion of education, and she
 enriched the lives of others by her warmth, her humor, and her
 enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest; and
 WHEREAS, Marjory graduated from Southern Methodist
 University and became a world traveler and a trailblazing citizen
 of the Lewisville community; she was the first woman to be
 elected to serve on the board of the Lewisville Independent
 School District; she was later the first Republican woman to be
 elected to the Texas State Board of Education, and with that
 victory, she also became the first Republican in Denton County to
 be elected to state office; and
 WHEREAS, Mrs. Vickery is noted for playing a key role in
 developing vital student safety measures, such as implementing
 speed limits in school zones and assigning crossing guards at
 designated sidewalks; she also worked with the Lewisville
 Independent School District Education Foundation to increase
 funding for students and teachers; in 2003, Vickery Elementary
 School opened its doors in honor of her many years of exceptional
 work on behalf of the school district; and
 WHEREAS, Mrs. Vickery shared 63 years of marriage with the
 late Paul Byron Vickery, and their loving relationship and
 happiness served as an example for their five children, their six
 grandchildren, and their six great-grandchildren; and
 WHEREAS, Marjory Vickery was a treasured Texan who was
 respected and admired for her tireless work on behalf of young
 citizens; she was recognized on numerous occasions for her many
 contributions to her community, and she leaves behind memories
 that will long be cherished by all who were privileged to share in
 her life; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
 family of Marjory Kent Vickery; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her
 family as an expression of deepest sympathy fromtheTexasSenate
 and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in memory of
 Marjory Vickery.
