SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 786 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Dr. Martha May Tevis, who is retiring on May 31, 2017, after 50 years of exceptional service with The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley; and WHEREAS, Dr. Tevis joined the faculty of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley in 1967 when it was still known as Pan American College; a native of Wichita Falls, she earned a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from Our Lady of the Lake University and a doctorate in the History and Philosophy of Education from The University of Texas at Austin; and WHEREAS, Over the course of her long and distinguished career, she has served the university in several capacities, including those of professor, program coordinator, grant director, and department chair; she has worked closely with graduate students and has chaired or cochaired many dissertation committees; and WHEREAS, Dr. Tevis has been honored by her university with awards for exceptional teaching, service, and achievement; she was also named by the alumni association as the recipient of the Distinguished Faculty Award; and WHEREAS, An exemplary educator, she has inspired her colleagues and her students with her great passion for teaching, and her presence at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley will be greatly missed; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby commend Dr. Martha May Tevis on her commitment to excellence in education and extend to her best wishes for continued success in all her endeavors; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
