SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 792
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
recognize the Deep East Texas Council of Governments and Economic
Development District for 50 years of outstanding service to the
citizens of Deep East Texas; and
WHEREAS, In November of 1966, 55 local government leaders
gathered to address the growth and development opportunities in
Deep East Texas and the quality of life of residents; they began
the process of creating the Deep East Texas Economic Development
District, and the Honorable Charles Wilson was unanimously
elected temporary chair and president of the newly formed
organization; the district's first office opened in 1967; and
WHEREAS, In 1972, the district adopted the name of Deep East
Texas Council of Governments and Economic Development District;
the organization serves as a regional planning commission for the
Deep East Texas region, which consists of Angelina, Houston,
Jasper, Nacogdoches, Newton, Polk, Sabine, San Augustine, San
Jacinto, Shelby, Trinity, and Tyler Counties; and
WHEREAS, Over the last 50 years, the work of the Deep East
Texas Council of Governments and Economic Development District
has contributed greatly to the economic success of the 12-county
region and has continually improved the quality of life for
residents; and
WHEREAS, On May 25, 2017, the council is initiating a
year-long anniversary celebration at its annual Membership and
Awards Luncheon; the organization has had a positive impact on
the services and environment of Deep East Texas and is indeed
deserving of recognition for helping the region and its residents
to thrive; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
Legislature, hereby commend all associated with the Deep East
Texas Council of Governments and Economic Development District
for contributing to the vitality of East Texas and the state and
extend to them congratulations on the organization's 50th
anniversary; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the
organization as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
