                            SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 810
 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
 recognize Senior Trooper Earl "Dub" Gillum, of the Texas
 Department of Public Safety, for his distinguished career in law
 enforcement and for his multiple acts of valor in the line of
 duty; and
 WHEREAS, Dub Gillum is a staff sergeant in the Public
 Information and Safety Education division of the Texas Highway
 Patrol; he has faced extreme danger in the course of his 27-year
 career with the highway patrol, and he nearly lost his life in
 1998 due to gunshot wounds; and
 WHEREAS, On October 1, 1998, while on patrol near Granbury,
 Officer Gillum stopped a reckless and speeding driver, Charlie
 Edward Cook; the driver, a felon wanted on seven separate felony
 charges, immediately fired on Officer Gillum from his truck,
 blinding him with a shot to his temple and ultimately shooting
 him 10 times; the wounded officer was able to call for backup, and
 the shooter was shot and killed after he opened fire on pursuing
 authorities who had tracked him to a nearby wooded area; State
 Trooper Gillum was off-duty for 14 months to recover after the
 incident, and during this time, he underwent 10 surgeries to
 regain his vision; and
 WHEREAS, In the years that have followed, Trooper Gillum
 has continued to exemplify the highest ideals of his profession;
 he was recently recognized for providing life-saving care to a
 stranded motorist, Paul Lilly, chief of police for a university;
 Chief Lilly had gone into heart failure while Trooper Gillum was
 providing roadside assistance to him for a flat tire; and
 WHEREAS, An exemplary law enforcement officer, Senior Trooper
 Dub Gillum has shown great courage and uncommon perseverance in
 carrying out his responsibilities, and he has worked diligently
 to ensure that his colleagues and their families have had the
 support and resources they need in times of loss and struggle; he
 is indeed deserving of recognition for his kindness and his
 steadfast dedication to duty; now, therefore, be it
 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
 Legislature, hereby commend Senior Trooper Earl "Dub" Gillum for
 his acts of heroism and his valor and extend to him best wishes
 for the future; and, be it further
 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him
 as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
