| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize the Taft Public Library on the occasion of its 90th |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | anniversary; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Taft Public Library was established in 1927 by |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | the Taft Women's Club under the leadership of Mrs. E. N. Tutt and |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Mrs. Ben Ivey; the women's clubs of the day provided women, who |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | had only recently gained the right to vote, an opportunity to |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | come together and promote civic improvements through |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | volunteering; and |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | WHEREAS, The library's original stock of 218 books was made |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | up of donations from area residents' personal collections and 34 |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | volumes purchased with the proceeds from two fund-raising tea |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | parties, or silver teas; and |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Today, the Taft Public Library features an array |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | of computer terminals and other technological advances in |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | addition to the approximately 20,000 print and audio books in the |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | library's collection; and |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Throughout the library's history, the women's |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | club has continued to raise money for its maintenance, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | renovation, and future projects by holding silver teas, bake |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | sales, book showers, cookbook sales, bridge parties, rummage |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | sales, style shows, and, most recently, table decorating |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | luncheons; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, The Taft Public Library has since its founding |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | served as a center for literary and community pursuits, and it is |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | truly fitting that it receive special recognition as it achieves |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | this milestone in its history; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | Legislature, hereby commend the staff and patrons of the Taft |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | Public Library on their commitment to an educated community and |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | extend to them best wishes for a memorable 90th anniversary |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | celebration; and, be it further |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |

| 35 | 35 | | the library as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate. |
