SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 861 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize the Taft Public Library on the occasion of its 90th anniversary; and WHEREAS, The Taft Public Library was established in 1927 by the Taft Women's Club under the leadership of Mrs. E. N. Tutt and Mrs. Ben Ivey; the women's clubs of the day provided women, who had only recently gained the right to vote, an opportunity to come together and promote civic improvements through volunteering; and WHEREAS, The library's original stock of 218 books was made up of donations from area residents' personal collections and 34 volumes purchased with the proceeds from two fund-raising tea parties, or silver teas; and WHEREAS, Today, the Taft Public Library features an array of computer terminals and other technological advances in addition to the approximately 20,000 print and audio books in the library's collection; and WHEREAS, Throughout the library's history, the women's club has continued to raise money for its maintenance, renovation, and future projects by holding silver teas, bake sales, book showers, cookbook sales, bridge parties, rummage sales, style shows, and, most recently, table decorating luncheons; and WHEREAS, The Taft Public Library has since its founding served as a center for literary and community pursuits, and it is truly fitting that it receive special recognition as it achieves this milestone in its history; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby commend the staff and patrons of the Taft Public Library on their commitment to an educated community and extend to them best wishes for a memorable 90th anniversary celebration; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the library as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
