| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Texas Commission on the Arts has announced the |

| 3 | 3 | | appointment of Marcia Ball as the 2018 State Musician; and |

| 4 | 4 | | WHEREAS, The Texas State Artist designations are awarded |

| 5 | 5 | | to a select group of individuals to honor the exceptional quality |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | of their work and their outstanding commitment to the arts in |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | Texas; and |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Born in Orange, Marcia Ball grew up just across |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | the border in Vinton, Louisiana, where she began playing piano at |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | age five; she joined the Austin music scene in 1970, and later |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | that decade issued her first solo album, Circuit Queen; in the |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | years since, her distinctive blend of blues, soul, zydeco, and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | New Orleans boogie has been showcased on more than a dozen |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | releases, all powered by her hard-driving piano, soulful vocals, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | and evocative songwriting; and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Renowned for her rollicking live performances, |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | Marcia Ball has been featured at festivals, theaters, and clubs |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | across the country as well as on numerous television programs; |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | her musical artistry has been honored with a host of accolades, |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | including 10 Blues Music Awards, 8 Living Blues Awards, and 5 |

| 21 | 21 | | Grammy Award nominations, and she has been inducted into the |

| 22 | 22 | | Museum of the Gulf Coast Music Hall of Fame and the Louisiana |

| 23 | 23 | | Music Hall of Fame; and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | WHEREAS, Widely admired for her immense talent, Marcia |

| 25 | 25 | | Ball has made important contributions to her chosen field of |

| 26 | 26 | | artistic endeavor, and in so doing, she has enriched the cultural |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | vitality of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it |

| 28 | 28 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | Legislature, hereby congratulate Marcia Ball on her selection as |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | the 2018 State Musician and extend to her sincere best wishes for |

| 31 | 31 | | continued success; and, be it further |
