SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 873 WHEREAS, The Texas Commission on the Arts has announced the appointment of Marcia Ball as the 2018 State Musician; and WHEREAS, The Texas State Artist designations are awarded to a select group of individuals to honor the exceptional quality of their work and their outstanding commitment to the arts in Texas; and WHEREAS, Born in Orange, Marcia Ball grew up just across the border in Vinton, Louisiana, where she began playing piano at age five; she joined the Austin music scene in 1970, and later that decade issued her first solo album, Circuit Queen; in the years since, her distinctive blend of blues, soul, zydeco, and New Orleans boogie has been showcased on more than a dozen releases, all powered by her hard-driving piano, soulful vocals, and evocative songwriting; and WHEREAS, Renowned for her rollicking live performances, Marcia Ball has been featured at festivals, theaters, and clubs across the country as well as on numerous television programs; her musical artistry has been honored with a host of accolades, including 10 Blues Music Awards, 8 Living Blues Awards, and 5 Grammy Award nominations, and she has been inducted into the Museum of the Gulf Coast Music Hall of Fame and the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame; and WHEREAS, Widely admired for her immense talent, Marcia Ball has made important contributions to her chosen field of artistic endeavor, and in so doing, she has enriched the cultural vitality of the Lone Star State; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, hereby congratulate Marcia Ball on her selection as the 2018 State Musician and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for Marcia Ball as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
