4	4	David Irvine Rucker
5	5	WHEREAS, Family and friends will forever feel the loss of
6	6	Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper David Irvine Rucker,
7	7	who died in the line of duty on September 29, 1981, at the age of
8	8	37; and
9	9	WHEREAS, Trooper Rucker was shot and killed during the
10	10	course of a traffic stop; he left behind a wife and three
11	11	children; and
12	12	WHEREAS, Born in Brownsville on October 21, 1943, David
13	13	Rucker was the son of Bracht and Hazel Dawn Rucker; he grew up in
14	14	Homestead, Florida, where he graduated from South Dade High
15	15	School in 1963; he studied liberal arts at Texas Southmost
16	16	College in Brownsville and went on to graduate from the Dade
17	17	County Police Academy; from 1966 to 1968, he served as a patrol
18	18	officer in the Homestead Police Department; and
19	19	WHEREAS, On September 15, 1969, Mr. Rucker took the oath of
20	20	the Texas State Highway Patrol; he was appointed patrolman in
21	21	1973, and that same year, he was promoted to patrolman II; at the
22	22	time of his death, he was assigned to Region 3 in Port Isabel; and
23	23	WHEREAS, In 1997, a memorial was placed at the site of
24	24	Trooper Rucker's death, and a street was renamed in his honor in
25	25	Isla Blanca Park on South Padre Island; the Carrizales-Rucker
26	26	Detention Center near Olmito bears his name, and in 2012, the
27	27	Texas Department of Public Safety named a river patrol boat in
28	28	Trooper Rucker's memory; and
29	29	WHEREAS, Though David Rucker was taken far too soon, his
30	30	legacy of public service and devotion to his family will continue
31	31	to inspire all those who hold him close in their hearts; now,
32	32	therefore, be it
33	33	RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th
34	34	Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the memory of David Irvine
35	35	Rucker and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and many
36	36	friends; and, be it further
37	37	RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
38	38	his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns this day, it do
39	39	so in memory of David Irvine Rucker.
