| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, The 90th birthday of an esteemed Texan is indeed |

| 6 | 7 | | cause for celebration, and L. Don Perkins of Cedar Park marked this |

| 7 | 8 | | significant milestone in his life on July 29, 2017; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, Born in Amory, Mississippi, in 1927, Don Perkins |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | enlisted in the United States Army not long before the end of World |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | War II and went on to serve in the Marine Reserve; after attending |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | Hinds Junior College, where he was a member of the football team, he |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | completed his bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | business at Mississippi State University; he pursued a career in |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | the energy sector and was especially involved in natural gas |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | processing; and |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Perkins has shared a fulfilling marriage of 64 |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | years with his fellow MSU graduate Virginia Barfield Perkins; they |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | are the parents of three treasured children, and they take great |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | pride in their eight grandchildren; before moving to Central Texas |

| 20 | 21 | | in March 2017, the couple lived in Houston for more than six |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | decades; and |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | WHEREAS, An avid fisherman, Mr. Perkins was involved in the |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | early development of the Coastal Conservation Association, and he |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | launched the Star Tournament, which boasted more than 40,000 |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | participants in 2016; he was also appointed to the Gulf Coast Marine |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | Fishery Council by President George H. W. Bush; exploring other |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | parts of the country, he hiked down the Grand Canyon when he was 65 |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | and again at 80, and he continued to ski the moguls until he was 84; |

| 30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Don Perkins has earned the admiration and affection |

| 31 | 32 | | of countless people, and it is truly a pleasure to honor him for |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | having joined an elite group of Texans who can look back on nine |

| 33 | 34 | | decades of meaningful achievements; now, therefore, be it |

| 34 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 35 | 36 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate L. Don Perkins |
