| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Gerald Fagan of Livingston was inducted into the |

| 6 | 7 | | Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame by the Alpha Chapter of Phi Beta Mu |
|---|
| 7 | 8 | | International School Bandmaster Fraternity on July 22, 2017; and |
|---|
| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, This prestigious honor recognizes retired Texas |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | band directors whose contributions have greatly benefited the |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | schools and communities in which they have worked; and |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Born in Scottsville, Gerald Fagan demonstrated a |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | love for music from an early age, and in spite of a childhood polio |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | diagnosis that left him with physical limitations, he received a |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | music scholarship to Stephen F. Austin State University, where he |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | earned his bachelor's degree in 1964 and his master of arts degree |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | in 1973; and |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Fagan began his career as a band director in the |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | Big Sandy Independent School District and went on to lead programs |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | at schools in Joaquin, Troup, Hallsville, Hurst, Center, Rusk, |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | Cleveland, Tarkington, Corrigan, and Livingston; he spent much of |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | his career at small schools, where his talent for developing |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | underperforming bands into sweepstakes winners earned him the |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | nickname "The Miracle Worker"; and |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | WHEREAS, After 32 years as a music educator, Mr. Fagan |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | officially retired, but for another decade, he continued sharing |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | his time and expertise in various capacities with schools that had |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | lost their band director; he has also served as director of the |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | Livingston Swing Big Jazz Band as well as the Livingston Area |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | Community Band; and |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, Mr. Fagan enjoys the love and |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | support of his wife, Bobbie Fagan; the couple are the proud parents |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | of six children, Susan, Sharon, Shelly, Jerry, Christy, and |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | Meredith; and |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | WHEREAS, A caring and dedicated mentor, Gerald Fagan has |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | inspired countless gifted young musicians to reach their full |
|---|
| 36 | 37 | | artistic potential, and his numerous accomplishments indeed merit |

| 37 | 38 | | special recognition; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 38 | 39 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 39 | 40 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Gerald Fagan |

| 40 | 41 | | on his induction into the Texas Bandmasters Hall of Fame and extend |

| 41 | 42 | | to him sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
