| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, For nearly six decades, Joe Rodriguez has rendered |

| 6 | 7 | | exceptional service to the Brownsville Independent School |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, A native of Edinburg, Joe Rodriguez earned his |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | bachelor's degree at Pan American College, where he also played |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | basketball and baseball, and he later received a master's degree |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | from Sam Houston State University; he began his career as an |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | assistant coach at Brownsville High School in the late 1950s and |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | worked his way up to athletic director, a post he held from 1991 to |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | 2009; and |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | WHEREAS, Early in his career, Mr. Rodriguez coached the |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | Brownsville High baseball team to a state championship appearance |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | in 1965, and he took the Golden Eagles football team to the |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | regionals in the 1969 state playoffs; moreover, he was instrumental |

| 19 | 20 | | in raising college scholarship funds for nearly 1,000 Brownsville |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | students, and as athletic director, he oversaw the upgrade of BISD |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | athletic facilities to include all-weather tracks and soccer fields |

| 22 | 23 | | with lights at each high school campus, as well as the opening of |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | the Margaret M. Clark Aquatic Center and the renovation of Sams |

| 24 | 25 | | Memorial Stadium; and |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, This notable Texan has further given of his time and |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | talents as secretary of the Brownsville ISD Board of Trustees, to |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | which he was reelected in 2014 after first serving that body for 15 |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | years in the 1970s and 1980s; his myriad contributions have been |

| 29 | 30 | | recognized with his induction into the Texas High School Athletic |

| 30 | 31 | | Directors Association Hall of Honor, the Texas High School Coaches |

| 31 | 32 | | Association Hall of Honor, and the Rio Grande Valley Sports Hall of |

| 32 | 33 | | Fame; and |

| 33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Through his outstanding vision and leadership, Joe |

| 34 | 35 | | Rodriguez has made a positive difference in the lives of countless |

| 35 | 36 | | young Texans, and he may indeed take pride in his many achievements; |

| 37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 38 | 39 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Joe Rodriguez on |
