| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Hugh Dell Gatewood has distinguished herself |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | through her exemplary service as president of the Woman's Auxiliary |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | of the National Baptist Convention, USA; and |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The Woman's Auxiliary of the National Baptist |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Convention, USA, was established to care for the needs of women |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | within the convention by promoting spiritual growth and Christian |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | education, training future leaders, and encouraging collaboration; |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | and |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | WHEREAS, A longtime member of the auxiliary, Dr. Gatewood |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | ably guided the group as its president from January 2005 to January |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | 2017; prior to holding the presidency, she served as vice president |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | as well as second vice president and west region director; over the |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | years, she has also been instrumental in creating study materials |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | and Sunday school curricula, and she has represented the |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | organization at a host of international events in the Bahamas, |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | Jamaica, Europe, and Africa; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Gatewood is a native of Houston and a graduate |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | of Texas Southern University; she enjoyed a rewarding career in |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | education, during which she taught at schools throughout the |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | Galveston and Houston Independent School Districts; in her free |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | time, she volunteers with the League of Women Voters and |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | Compassionate Care Hospice, and she is a speaker, lecturer, and |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | workshop presenter; and |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | WHEREAS, Sustained by a deep and abiding faith, Dr. Gatewood |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | has been a congregant of Greater First Baptist Church for nearly six |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | decades; she has also benefited the Baptist community by serving at |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | the highest levels within the Woman's Auxiliary of the Lincoln |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | Southern District Association and the Woman's Auxiliary of the |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | Baptist Missionary and Education Convention of Texas, which she has |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | led for 27 years; and |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | WHEREAS, Through her vision, hard work, and dedication to |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | excellence, Dr. Hugh Dell Gatewood has helped advance the mission |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | of the Woman's Auxiliary of the National Baptist Convention, USA, |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | and she may indeed reflect with pride on her myriad contributions to |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | that organization; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Dr. Hugh Dell |
|---|
| 43 | 43 | | Gatewood on her service to the Woman's Auxiliary of the National |
|---|
| 44 | 44 | | Baptist Convention, USA, and extend to her sincere best wishes for |
|---|
| 45 | 45 | | continued success; and, be it further |

| 46 | 46 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
