| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Family and friends will long cherish their memories |

| 6 | 7 | | of William Sumerford of Amarillo, who passed away on August 1, 2017, |

| 7 | 8 | | at the age of 76; and |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The son of William and Emma Sumerford, Bill |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | Sumerford was born on April 22, 1941, in Temple, and after |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | graduating from high school in Midland, he earned a bachelor's |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | degree from Texas Tech University; he went on to work as a refinery |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | engineer for Sun Oil Company and later for Oryx Energies, from which |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | he retired in 2000; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, After relocating to Amarillo, Mr. Sumerford became |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | actively involved in local politics; over the years, he served as |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | secretary of the Potter County Republican Party executive |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | committee, and in 2011 he was recognized by the Republican Party of |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | Texas as Volunteer of the Year in Senate District 31; he further |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | gave of his time and talents by repairing old computers, which he |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | donated to nonprofit organizations; and |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Mr. Sumerford was the devoted husband of Kathy |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | Sumerford and the proud father of two sons, Christopher and Jim, and |
|---|
| 23 | 24 | | four daughters, Dawn, Sherry, Tricia, and Sheryl; he also |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | experienced the joy of welcoming 11 grandchildren and 10 |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | great-grandchildren into his family; and |
|---|
| 26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Although Bill Sumerford will be deeply missed, he |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | leaves behind a record of civic engagement and service to others |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | that will continue to inspire all those who knew and loved him; now, |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | therefore, be it |

| 30 | 31 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |

| 31 | 32 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory |

| 32 | 33 | | of Bill Sumerford and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and |

| 33 | 34 | | many friends; and, be it further |
