H.R. No. 419
R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Family and friends will long cherish their memories
of William Sumerford of Amarillo, who passed away on August 1, 2017,
at the age of 76; and
WHEREAS, The son of William and Emma Sumerford, Bill
Sumerford was born on April 22, 1941, in Temple, and after
graduating from high school in Midland, he earned a bachelor's
degree from Texas Tech University; he went on to work as a refinery
engineer for Sun Oil Company and later for Oryx Energies, from which
he retired in 2000; and
WHEREAS, After relocating to Amarillo, Mr. Sumerford became
actively involved in local politics; over the years, he served as
secretary of the Potter County Republican Party executive
committee, and in 2011 he was recognized by the Republican Party of
Texas as Volunteer of the Year in Senate District 31; he further
gave of his time and talents by repairing old computers, which he
donated to nonprofit organizations; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Sumerford was the devoted husband of Kathy
Sumerford and the proud father of two sons, Christopher and Jim, and
four daughters, Dawn, Sherry, Tricia, and Sheryl; he also
experienced the joy of welcoming 11 grandchildren and 10
great-grandchildren into his family; and
WHEREAS, Although Bill Sumerford will be deeply missed, he
leaves behind a record of civic engagement and service to others
that will continue to inspire all those who knew and loved him; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the memory
of Bill Sumerford and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and
many friends; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Bill
Sumerford.
