45 R E S O L U T I O N
56 WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the
67 passing of George Dawson of Dallas on July 26, 2017, at the age of
78 96; and
89 WHEREAS, The son of Scottish immigrants, George Dawson was
910 born in Brooklyn, New York, on April 29, 1921, to George and Mary
1011 Dawson; as a young man, he raised homing pigeons on the roof of his
1112 apartment building and learned to play the violin, the piano, and
1213 the trumpet, marking the beginning of his lifelong passion for
1314 music; shortly after graduating from high school, he married the
1415 former Gertrude Becker, and he became the proud father of a
1516 daughter, Diane; and
1617 WHEREAS, During World War II, Mr. Dawson served in the U.S.
1718 Army as a trumpeter in a USO dance band, and after the war, he
1819 studied music at North Texas State University; he went on to enjoy a
1920 rewarding career as a bass player for the Dallas Symphony
2021 Orchestra, and in the off-season, he performed with several bands
2122 and taught classes on such varied topics as music appreciation,
2223 ballroom dancing, and fencing; and
2324 WHEREAS, On October 31, 1952, Mr. Dawson wed his second wife,
2425 the former Kim Garrett; they shared 57 years of marriage before her
2526 passing in 2010, and they became the loving parents of three
2627 children, Kim, Lisa, and George; while continuing to perform with
2728 the symphony, Mr. Dawson became interested in photography and
2829 established himself as a successful commercial and fashion
2930 photographer, taking part in shoots at locations around the world,
3031 including Kenya, Thailand, Peru, Greece, and Ireland; after
3132 retiring from photography in 1982, he went to work managing his
3233 wife's modeling and talent business, the Kim Dawson Agency; and
3334 WHEREAS, A man of many interests, Mr. Dawson was an avid
3435 tennis player and an art collector, and he counted studying French,
3536 attending the opera, and traveling with Mrs. Dawson among his
3637 favorite pursuits; he especially delighted in the time he spent
3738 with his grandchildren, Chris, Dana, Taylor, Lauren, Anna,
3839 Kimberly, and Aidan, and his great-grandchildren, Guerin and
3940 Dawson; and
4041 WHEREAS, Admired for his kindness, his generosity, and his
4142 devotion to his family, George Dawson lived life to the fullest, and
4243 the wonderful memories he leaves behind will long inspire all who
4344 had the good fortune to know him; now, therefore, be it
4445 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
4546 Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of
4647 George Dawson and extend heartfelt sympathy to his relatives and
4748 many friends; and, be it further
4849 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
4950 prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
5051 Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of George
5152 Dawson.
