5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, A rich and purposeful life drew to a close with the |

6 | 7 | | passing of George Dawson of Dallas on July 26, 2017, at the age of |

8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, The son of Scottish immigrants, George Dawson was |
---|
9 | 10 | | born in Brooklyn, New York, on April 29, 1921, to George and Mary |
---|
10 | 11 | | Dawson; as a young man, he raised homing pigeons on the roof of his |
---|
11 | 12 | | apartment building and learned to play the violin, the piano, and |
---|
12 | 13 | | the trumpet, marking the beginning of his lifelong passion for |
---|
13 | 14 | | music; shortly after graduating from high school, he married the |
---|
14 | 15 | | former Gertrude Becker, and he became the proud father of a |
---|
15 | 16 | | daughter, Diane; and |
---|
16 | 17 | | WHEREAS, During World War II, Mr. Dawson served in the U.S. |
---|
17 | 18 | | Army as a trumpeter in a USO dance band, and after the war, he |
---|
18 | 19 | | studied music at North Texas State University; he went on to enjoy a |
---|
19 | 20 | | rewarding career as a bass player for the Dallas Symphony |
---|
20 | 21 | | Orchestra, and in the off-season, he performed with several bands |
---|
21 | 22 | | and taught classes on such varied topics as music appreciation, |
---|
22 | 23 | | ballroom dancing, and fencing; and |
---|
23 | 24 | | WHEREAS, On October 31, 1952, Mr. Dawson wed his second wife, |
---|
24 | 25 | | the former Kim Garrett; they shared 57 years of marriage before her |
---|
25 | 26 | | passing in 2010, and they became the loving parents of three |
---|
26 | 27 | | children, Kim, Lisa, and George; while continuing to perform with |
---|
27 | 28 | | the symphony, Mr. Dawson became interested in photography and |
---|
28 | 29 | | established himself as a successful commercial and fashion |
---|
29 | 30 | | photographer, taking part in shoots at locations around the world, |
---|
30 | 31 | | including Kenya, Thailand, Peru, Greece, and Ireland; after |
---|
31 | 32 | | retiring from photography in 1982, he went to work managing his |
---|
32 | 33 | | wife's modeling and talent business, the Kim Dawson Agency; and |
---|
33 | 34 | | WHEREAS, A man of many interests, Mr. Dawson was an avid |
---|
34 | 35 | | tennis player and an art collector, and he counted studying French, |
---|
35 | 36 | | attending the opera, and traveling with Mrs. Dawson among his |
---|
36 | 37 | | favorite pursuits; he especially delighted in the time he spent |
---|
37 | 38 | | with his grandchildren, Chris, Dana, Taylor, Lauren, Anna, |
---|
38 | 39 | | Kimberly, and Aidan, and his great-grandchildren, Guerin and |
---|
39 | 40 | | Dawson; and |
---|
40 | 41 | | WHEREAS, Admired for his kindness, his generosity, and his |
---|
41 | 42 | | devotion to his family, George Dawson lived life to the fullest, and |
---|
42 | 43 | | the wonderful memories he leaves behind will long inspire all who |
---|
43 | 44 | | had the good fortune to know him; now, therefore, be it |
---|
44 | 45 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas |
---|
45 | 46 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life of |
---|
46 | 47 | | George Dawson and extend heartfelt sympathy to his relatives and |
---|
47 | 48 | | many friends; and, be it further |

48 | 49 | | RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |

49 | 50 | | prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |

50 | 51 | | Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of George |
