| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Dr. Song An of The University of Texas at El Paso, who |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | has been named the recipient of a 2017 Regents' Outstanding |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | Teaching Award; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, These prestigious awards are conferred annually |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | in recognition of faculty members at The University of Texas |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | System's eight academic and six health institutions who have |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | demonstrated extraordinary classroom performance and innovation |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | in undergraduate instruction; the awards are the highest honor |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | given by the board of regents; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Song An is an assistant professor of |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | mathematics education in the College of Education; he has drawn |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | on his extensive musicology background to develop research that |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | concentrates on music-themed mathematics curriculum and |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | mathematics-centered interdisciplinary instruction; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, Dr. An's research has demonstrated that the |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | connection between music and mathematics goes beyond a simple |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | interrelationship, and that the ability to understand one |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | through the lens of the other has contributed to many of the most |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | important breakthroughs in the two fields; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, He has been widely published in academic journals |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | and is the author of Music-Math Integrated Activities for |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | Elementary and Middle School Students; it is truly fitting that |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | he receive special recognition for his exemplary achievements; |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Dr. Song An on |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | his commitment to excellence in education and extend |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | congratulations to him on receiving a Regents' Outstanding |
|---|
