SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 142 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Dr. Song An of The University of Texas at El Paso, who has been named the recipient of a 2017 Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award; and WHEREAS, These prestigious awards are conferred annually in recognition of faculty members at The University of Texas System's eight academic and six health institutions who have demonstrated extraordinary classroom performance and innovation in undergraduate instruction; the awards are the highest honor given by the board of regents; and WHEREAS, Dr. Song An is an assistant professor of mathematics education in the College of Education; he has drawn on his extensive musicology background to develop research that concentrates on music-themed mathematics curriculum and mathematics-centered interdisciplinary instruction; and WHEREAS, Dr. An's research has demonstrated that the connection between music and mathematics goes beyond a simple interrelationship, and that the ability to understand one through the lens of the other has contributed to many of the most important breakthroughs in the two fields; and WHEREAS, He has been widely published in academic journals and is the author of Music-Math Integrated Activities for Elementary and Middle School Students; it is truly fitting that he receive special recognition for his exemplary achievements; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Dr. Song An on his commitment to excellence in education and extend congratulations to him on receiving a Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for him as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
