| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to |

| 3 | 3 | | recognize Dr. Ann Branan Horak of The University of Texas at El |

| 4 | 4 | | Paso, who has been named the recipient of a 2017 Regents' |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | Outstanding Teaching Award; and |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | WHEREAS, These prestigious awards are conferred annually |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | in recognition of faculty members at The University of Texas |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | System's eight academic and six health institutions who have |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | demonstrated extraordinary classroom performance and innovation |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | in undergraduate instruction; the awards are the highest honor |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | given by the board of regents; and |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Horak is an associate professor in the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | Religious Studies Program within the College of Liberal Arts; she |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | has worked diligently to create a trusting classroom atmosphere |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | in which students can discuss the sometimes-contentious issue of |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | religion without fear of judgment; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, She has been successful in introducing her |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | students, many of whom are the first in their family to attend |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | college, to new beliefs, new practices, and unfamiliar faith |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | traditions; her classes provide a place where they can explore |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | new ideas without the pressure to defend their own faith or |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | attack the beliefs of others; and |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | WHEREAS, Dr. Horak has had a profound impact on the lives |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | of countless students, and it is truly fitting that she receive |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | special recognition for her outstanding achievements; now, |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Dr. Ann Branan |

| 29 | 29 | | Horak on her commitment to excellence in education and extend |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | congratulations to her on receiving a Regents' Outstanding |
