SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 143 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to recognize Dr. Ann Branan Horak of The University of Texas at El Paso, who has been named the recipient of a 2017 Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award; and WHEREAS, These prestigious awards are conferred annually in recognition of faculty members at The University of Texas System's eight academic and six health institutions who have demonstrated extraordinary classroom performance and innovation in undergraduate instruction; the awards are the highest honor given by the board of regents; and WHEREAS, Dr. Horak is an associate professor in the Religious Studies Program within the College of Liberal Arts; she has worked diligently to create a trusting classroom atmosphere in which students can discuss the sometimes-contentious issue of religion without fear of judgment; and WHEREAS, She has been successful in introducing her students, many of whom are the first in their family to attend college, to new beliefs, new practices, and unfamiliar faith traditions; her classes provide a place where they can explore new ideas without the pressure to defend their own faith or attack the beliefs of others; and WHEREAS, Dr. Horak has had a profound impact on the lives of countless students, and it is truly fitting that she receive special recognition for her outstanding achievements; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commend Dr. Ann Branan Horak on her commitment to excellence in education and extend congratulations to her on receiving a Regents' Outstanding Teaching Award; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for her as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
