SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 66 WHEREAS, The 100th birthday of an esteemed Texan is indeed cause for celebration, and Billie Gertrude Hooks Manck marked this momentous milestone in her life on June 3, 2017, in the company of family and friends; and WHEREAS, Born in Battiest, Oklahoma, in 1917, the former Billie Hooks was the only child of Bessie and Q. P. Hooks; her mother died when she was just two years old, and following her father's remarriage, she grew up with four brothers, Donald, Bobbie, Charles, and Corky; and WHEREAS, She graduated from Gaston High School, where she met her future husband, Lloyd T. Manck; they married in November 1934, and they eventually became the proud parents of six children, Shirley Ruth, Marilynn, Doris, Donnie, Nina, and Lynn; early in their life together, they moved to Illinois and Ohio, but they returned to East Texas in 1942; and WHEREAS, Following the war, Mr. Manck founded a machine shop that grew into a firm specializing in road-boring, and Mrs. Manck frequently accompanied him on business trips across the United States and Canada; in 1954, they relocated the company to 64 acres in Henderson, where they also raised prize-winning Herefords and Brittany spaniels; and WHEREAS, Mrs. Manck and her husband shared a fulfilling relationship of nearly 53 years until his passing; she continued to run the machine shop with her son, Lynn, before selling it in 2004; recently, she moved from her home of more than six decades to live with her youngest daughter, Nina; she is the beloved matriarch of a fine family that has grown to include 21 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and 8 great-great-grandchildren; and WHEREAS, Billie Manck has witnessed a panorama of change over the course of a century, and she has met life's challenges and opportunities with dignity and grace, earning the deep admiration of all who are privileged to know her; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby congratulate Billie Gertrude Hooks Manck on her 100th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes for continued happiness; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for Mrs. Manck as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
