| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, The members of New Harmony Baptist Church in Tyler |

| 3 | 3 | | marked a momentous event in their history with the celebration of |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | the church's 150th anniversary on April 15, 2017; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The congregation of New Harmony was organized in |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | the aftermath of the Civil War in April 1867, when 18 people came |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | together to establish a new spiritual home in a community 12 |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | miles northwest of Tyler; its first building, a log cabin |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | structure, was erected on the site that later became the New |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | Harmony Cemetery; in 1907, the church family moved to its current |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | location, where worship services are held in what is now its |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | sixth sanctuary; and |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Since its inception, New Harmony Baptist has |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | benefited from the leadership of a succession of able pastors, |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | who have overseen the creation of numerous ministries to serve |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | the needs of the congregation and the community; today, the |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | church sponsors programs specifically for men, women, youth, and |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | seniors, along with support groups for individuals coping with |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | grief and other life situations; in addition, the church seeks to |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | encourage members in their evangelism through a variety of |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | mission opportunities; and |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Generations of area residents have looked to New |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Harmony Baptist Church for inspiration, guidance, and fellowship |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | over the years, and it is a pleasure to recognize the steadfast |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | faith and dedication that have sustained the church across three |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | centuries; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commemorate the 150th |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | anniversary of New Harmony Baptist Church and extend to the |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | congregation sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it |
