SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 84 WHEREAS, The members of New Harmony Baptist Church in Tyler marked a momentous event in their history with the celebration of the church's 150th anniversary on April 15, 2017; and WHEREAS, The congregation of New Harmony was organized in the aftermath of the Civil War in April 1867, when 18 people came together to establish a new spiritual home in a community 12 miles northwest of Tyler; its first building, a log cabin structure, was erected on the site that later became the New Harmony Cemetery; in 1907, the church family moved to its current location, where worship services are held in what is now its sixth sanctuary; and WHEREAS, Since its inception, New Harmony Baptist has benefited from the leadership of a succession of able pastors, who have overseen the creation of numerous ministries to serve the needs of the congregation and the community; today, the church sponsors programs specifically for men, women, youth, and seniors, along with support groups for individuals coping with grief and other life situations; in addition, the church seeks to encourage members in their evangelism through a variety of mission opportunities; and WHEREAS, Generations of area residents have looked to New Harmony Baptist Church for inspiration, guidance, and fellowship over the years, and it is a pleasure to recognize the steadfast faith and dedication that have sustained the church across three centuries; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 85th Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby commemorate the 150th anniversary of New Harmony Baptist Church and extend to the congregation sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for the church as an expression of high regard from the Texas Senate.
