55 A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
66 AN ACT
77 relating to qualifications of licensed court interpreters.
88 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
99 SECTION 1. Section 57.002(b-1), Government Code, is amended
1010 to read as follows:
1111 (b-1) A licensed court interpreter appointed by a court
1212 under Subsection (a) or (b) must hold a license issued under Chapter
1313 157 [that includes the appropriate designation under Section
1414 157.101(d) that indicates the interpreter is permitted to interpret
1515 in that court].
1616 SECTION 2. Section 157.101, Government Code, is amended by
1717 amending Subsection (d) and adding Subsection (d-1) to read as
1818 follows:
1919 (d) A license issued under this chapter must include at
2020 least one of the following designations:
2121 (1) a basic designation [that permits the interpreter
2222 to interpret court proceedings in justice courts and municipal
2323 courts that are not municipal courts of record, but the designation
2424 does not permit the interpreter to interpret a proceeding before
2525 the court in which the judge is acting as a magistrate]; or
2626 (2) a master designation [that permits the interpreter
2727 to interpret court proceedings in all courts in this state,
2828 including justice courts and municipal courts described by
2929 Subdivision (1)].
3030 (d-1) A court interpreter who holds a license issued under
3131 this chapter may interpret court proceedings in all courts in this
3232 state, regardless of whether the license has a basic designation or
3333 master designation.
3434 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2019.
