76 AN ACT
87 relating to the inclusion of information about the process of
98 voting as part of the social studies curriculum requirements for
109 public high school students.
1110 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1211 SECTION 1. Section 28.002, Education Code, is amended by
1312 adding Subsection (c-4) to read as follows:
1413 (c-4) The State Board of Education shall adopt rules
1514 requiring a high school student, as part of the social studies
1615 curriculum under Subsection (a)(1)(D), to be provided at least once
1716 with practical information about the process of voting in public
1817 elections, including specific information about using the type of
1918 voting machines used by the county in which the student is enrolled.
2019 The rules shall require a school district, to the extent
2120 practicable, to seek assistance and cooperation from the county
2221 election office in providing students with exposure to and
2322 experience using the applicable voting machine.
2423 SECTION 2. This Act applies beginning with the 2019-2020
2524 school year.
2625 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
2726 a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
2827 provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this
2928 Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
3029 Act takes effect September 1, 2019.
