9 | 10 | | alliances, and pledges of friendship with the governments of Spain, |

10 | 11 | | Mexico, the German Confederation, and the United States; President |

11 | 12 | | Sam Houston and the Republic of Texas formally acknowledged a |

12 | 13 | | friendship with the Lipan Apaches through the Treaty of Live Oak |

13 | 14 | | Point in 1838; and |

14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, Today, the Lipan Apache Tribe is represented by a |

15 | 16 | | tribal government with a constitution and bylaws, and the tribe is a |
---|
16 | 17 | | voting member of the National Congress of American Indians; the |
---|
17 | 18 | | eagle remains sacred to the tribe, and the U.S. Department of the |
---|
18 | 19 | | Interior has acknowledged the religious and legal rights of more |
---|
19 | 20 | | than 200 tribal members to use eagle feathers in their ceremonial |
---|
20 | 21 | | practices; and |
---|
21 | 22 | | WHEREAS, Lipan Apaches have faithfully served in the armed |

22 | 23 | | forces of the United States during World War I, World War II, the |

23 | 24 | | Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, |

24 | 25 | | as well as in other deployments; moreover, tribe member Frank Leota |

25 | 26 | | of San Antonio has risen to the prestigious post of command sergeant |

26 | 27 | | major for the U.S. Army Pacific Command; in addition, members of the |

27 | 28 | | Lipan Apache tribe have served as police officers, ministers, |
---|
28 | 29 | | nurses, and schoolteachers, as well as in many other important |
---|
29 | 30 | | occupations; and |

30 | 31 | | WHEREAS, Blessed with a rich heritage, the Lipan Apaches have |

31 | 32 | | maintained a strong sense of identity and community, and they |

32 | 33 | | continue to make a valuable contribution to the culture of the Lone |

33 | 34 | | Star State; now, therefore, be it |

34 | 35 | | RESOLVED, That the 86th Legislature of the State of Texas |

35 | 36 | | hereby recognize the Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas and commend it on |
