56 WHEREAS, The Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas is the present-day
67 incarnation of a proud people who have lived in Texas and northern
78 Mexico for more than 300 years; and
89 WHEREAS, The Lipan Apaches have entered into treaties,
910 alliances, and pledges of friendship with the governments of Spain,
1011 Mexico, the German Confederation, and the United States; President
1112 Sam Houston and the Republic of Texas formally acknowledged a
1213 friendship with the Lipan Apaches through the Treaty of Live Oak
1314 Point in 1838; and
1415 WHEREAS, Today, the Lipan Apache Tribe is represented by a
1516 tribal government with a constitution and bylaws, and the tribe is a
1617 voting member of the National Congress of American Indians; the
1718 eagle remains sacred to the tribe, and the U.S. Department of the
1819 Interior has acknowledged the religious and legal rights of more
1920 than 200 tribal members to use eagle feathers in their ceremonial
2021 practices; and
2122 WHEREAS, Lipan Apaches have faithfully served in the armed
2223 forces of the United States during World War I, World War II, the
2324 Korean War, the Vietnam War, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan,
2425 as well as in other deployments; moreover, tribe member Frank Leota
2526 of San Antonio has risen to the prestigious post of command sergeant
2627 major for the U.S. Army Pacific Command; in addition, members of the
2728 Lipan Apache tribe have served as police officers, ministers,
2829 nurses, and schoolteachers, as well as in many other important
2930 occupations; and
3031 WHEREAS, Blessed with a rich heritage, the Lipan Apaches have
3132 maintained a strong sense of identity and community, and they
3233 continue to make a valuable contribution to the culture of the Lone
3334 Star State; now, therefore, be it
3435 RESOLVED, That the 86th Legislature of the State of Texas
3536 hereby recognize the Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas and commend it on
3637 its many valuable contributions to this state; and, be it further
3738 RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
3839 prepared for the tribe as an expression of high regard by the Texas
3940 House of Representatives and Senate.
