| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, For close to half a century, the Lone Star State has |

| 9 | 10 | | been home to a growing population of Vietnamese Americans, a vast |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | number of whom settled in coastal and metropolitan areas following |

| 11 | 12 | | the end of the Vietnam War; the state boasts one of the nation's |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | largest Vietnamese American communities, with more than 210,000 |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | members, nearly half of whom live in the Greater Houston area; |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | Bellaire Boulevard in the Bayou City is particularly known for its |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | dynamic Vietnamese American business sector, encompassing |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | restaurants, entertainment venues, and medical and legal offices, |

| 17 | 18 | | as well as an array of other establishments; and |
|---|
| 18 | 19 | | WHEREAS, Vietnamese Americans have demonstrated strong |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | support for higher education and professional development in fields |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | ranging from medicine and the law to sports, the arts, and public |
|---|
| 21 | 22 | | service; among the many prominent members of the community are |
|---|
| 22 | 23 | | astronaut Eugene H. Trinh, former Dallas Cowboys player Dat Nguyen, |

| 23 | 24 | | and scientist Nguyet Anh Duong, who developed the thermobaric |
|---|
| 24 | 25 | | weapon; and |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | WHEREAS, While embracing the democratic ideals of our nation, |

| 26 | 27 | | including freedom of speech and religion, Vietnamese Americans in |
|---|
| 27 | 28 | | Texas have also worked to preserve and share their cultural |
|---|
| 28 | 29 | | traditions; students at Rice University founded the Hung Vuong |

| 29 | 30 | | Vietnamese Language and Culture School to teach youngsters about |
|---|
| 30 | 31 | | their heritage; moreover, each year the Vietnamese American |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | community in Houston invites the wider community to participate in |
|---|
| 32 | 33 | | such Lunar New Year festivities as the Alief International parade |
|---|
| 33 | 34 | | and events featuring dragon dances, musical performances, and |
|---|
| 34 | 35 | | ethnic foods; and |
|---|
| 35 | 36 | | WHEREAS, The Vietnamese American community has contributed |

| 36 | 37 | | immeasurably to the prosperity and vibrancy of the Lone Star State, |

| 37 | 38 | | and it is truly a pleasure to welcome the visiting delegation and |

| 38 | 39 | | join in celebrating a rich history of achievement that enhances our |
