H.R. No. 185 R E S O L U T I O N WHEREAS, A life made rich through meaningful service drew to a close with the death of Harmon Avon Guthrie of Mabank on October 5, 2018, at the age of 89; and WHEREAS, The son of Arthur and Carrie Guthrie, Harmon Guthrie was born on November 8, 1928, in Athens and grew up with three siblings, Millie, Travis, and Bill; he was joined in matrimony to Frances Williams in 1958, and the couple shared a rewarding marriage that spanned 60 years; he took great pride in his son, Travis, and in his stepsons, Bobby, Terry, David, Ronnie, Wayne, and James, and he had the pleasure of seeing his family grow to include numerous grandchildren; and WHEREAS, Answering his nation's call to duty, Mr. Guthrie enlisted in the U.S. Navy in January 1946, at the age of 17, and was deployed to the Pacific; during the Korean War, he served for two years aboard a destroyer, the USS Cushing, and he subsequently enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving as a jet engine technician in the Cold War and Vietnam War before retiring in 1969 at the rank of technical sergeant; in civilian life, he worked for more than 15 years as a keel operator in the clay industry in Texas; and WHEREAS, A devoted family man and a proud veteran, Harmon Guthrie leaves behind a legacy of generosity, humility, and strength that will continue to inspire all those who knew and loved him; now, therefore, be it RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Harmon Avon Guthrie and extend heartfelt sympathy to his family and many friends; and, be it further RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Harmon Avon Guthrie.
