| 5 | 6 | | WHEREAS, Many proud Texans are visiting Austin on February |

| 6 | 7 | | 25, 2019, to celebrate Texas Southern University Day at the State |

| 8 | 9 | | WHEREAS, One of the nation's preeminent historically black |
|---|
| 9 | 10 | | colleges and universities, TSU was founded in 1927; it was |
|---|
| 10 | 11 | | designated as a special-purpose institution of higher education for |
|---|
| 11 | 12 | | urban programming by the Texas Legislature in 1973 and retains a |
|---|
| 12 | 13 | | steadfast commitment to innovative approaches that respond to the |
|---|
| 13 | 14 | | metropolitan environment; and |
|---|
| 14 | 15 | | WHEREAS, The university now serves approximately 9,700 |
|---|
| 15 | 16 | | undergraduate and graduate students from around the world; it |
|---|
| 16 | 17 | | offers well over 100 baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degree |
|---|
| 17 | 18 | | programs in numerous schools, including the Barbara Jordan-Mickey |

| 18 | 19 | | Leland School of Public Affairs, named after two alumni who served |
|---|
| 19 | 20 | | with distinction in the United States Congress; and |
|---|
| 20 | 21 | | WHEREAS, TSU is noted for its Thurgood Marshall School of Law |

| 21 | 22 | | and its College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences; the university is |

| 22 | 23 | | also active in the Texas Legislative Internship Program, which |

| 23 | 24 | | grants students the opportunity to gain valuable experience in |

| 24 | 25 | | state government, alongside many legislators who share personal |
|---|
| 25 | 26 | | ties to their alma mater; and |

| 26 | 27 | | WHEREAS, Under the leadership of its 12th president, |

| 27 | 28 | | Dr. Austin A. Lane, TSU has redoubled its efforts to increase |

| 28 | 29 | | student success rates and academic rigor while expanding its |
|---|
| 29 | 30 | | research programs, enhancing its culture, and developing stronger |

| 30 | 31 | | relationships with Houston public schools, local community |
|---|
| 31 | 32 | | colleges, alumni, and other stakeholders; and |

| 32 | 33 | | WHEREAS, For more than 90 years, Texas Southern University |

| 33 | 34 | | has played an important role in higher education in the Lone Star |

| 34 | 35 | | State, and its graduates continue to achieve success and make |

| 35 | 36 | | significant contributions in numerous fields of endeavor; now, |

| 37 | 38 | | RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 86th Texas |

| 38 | 39 | | Legislature hereby recognize February 25, 2019, as Texas Southern |

| 40 | 41 | | associated with the institution sincere best wishes for the future; |
