66 AN ACT
77 relating to physician delegation of the provision of anesthesia
88 services to certain anesthesiologist assistants.
99 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
1010 SECTION 1. The heading to Subchapter B, Chapter 157,
1111 Occupations Code, is amended to read as follows:
1212 SUBCHAPTER B. DELEGATION TO ADVANCED PRACTICE REGISTERED NURSES,
1313 [AND] PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS, AND ANESTHESIOLOGIST ASSISTANTS
1414 SECTION 2. Subchapter B, Chapter 157, Occupations Code, is
1515 amended by adding Section 157.061 to read as follows:
1616 Sec. 157.061. DELEGATION TO CERTAIN ANESTHESIOLOGIST
1717 ASSISTANTS. (a) In a licensed hospital or ambulatory surgical
1818 center, a supervising physician who is an anesthesiologist may
1919 delegate the administration and provision of an anesthetic or an
2020 anesthesia-related service ordered by the supervising physician to
2121 an anesthesiologist assistant who:
2222 (1) has passed the Certifying Examination for
2323 Anesthesiologist Assistants administered by the National
2424 Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants or the
2525 commission's successor entity; and
2626 (2) holds a certificate issued by the National
2727 Commission for Certification of Anesthesiologist Assistants or the
2828 commission's successor entity.
2929 (b) The supervising physician's order for an anesthetic or
3030 an anesthesia-related service is not required to specify a drug,
3131 dose, or administration technique.
3232 SECTION 3. This Act takes effect September 1, 2019.
