| 2 | 2 | | WHEREAS, Proud residents of Pearland are gathering in |

| 3 | 3 | | Austin on February 27, 2019, to celebrate Pearland Day at the |
|---|
| 4 | 4 | | State Capitol; and |
|---|
| 5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, Located in Brazoria County, Pearland was |
|---|
| 6 | 6 | | originally established as Mark Belt in 1893, but the following |
|---|
| 7 | 7 | | year, its name was changed to reflect the large number of pear |
|---|
| 8 | 8 | | trees in the area; by 1898, the town had a newspaper, 12 |
|---|
| 9 | 9 | | businesses, and 75 residents; however, its growth slowed |
|---|
| 10 | 10 | | considerably, and many of its fruit trees were destroyed when it |
|---|
| 11 | 11 | | was hit by the Galveston hurricane in 1900; the planting of |
|---|
| 12 | 12 | | oranges and figs helped revive local agriculture, until the |
|---|
| 13 | 13 | | freeze of 1918 caused another wave of damage; Pearland bounced |
|---|
| 14 | 14 | | back a second time, though, and in 1934, oil and gas were |
|---|
| 15 | 15 | | discovered in the area, prompting significant growth in the |
|---|
| 16 | 16 | | decades that followed; and |
|---|
| 17 | 17 | | WHEREAS, While enjoying the benefits of its proximity to |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | Houston and such sites as the Johnson Space Center, Kemah |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | Boardwalk, and the beaches in Galveston, Pearland maintains its |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | own unique character; in 1999, it was named an All-America City |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | by the National Civic League, and its notable attractions include |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | the more than 100-year-old Gulf, Colorado, and Santa Fe Railroad |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | Depot, Pearland Town Center, and an emerging biotech and |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | manufacturing area known as the Kirby District; and |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | WHEREAS, Pearland is fortunate to have a local chamber of |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | commerce that works diligently to further the city's development |
|---|
| 27 | 27 | | andkeepthecitizenryinformedonmattersthataffectthe |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | region; the city also boasts a highly rated school system that is |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | committed to helping with workforce development; moreover, the |
|---|
| 30 | 30 | | University of Houston-Clear Lake Pearland Campus is meeting area |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | needs with the addition of a health science building, and the |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | city benefits from an ongoing partnership between the university |
|---|
| 33 | 33 | | and Alvin Community College; and |
|---|
| 34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Over the last 125 years, Pearland has experienced |
|---|
| 35 | 35 | | explosive growth, substantial development, and a handful of |
|---|
| 36 | 36 | | tragedies along the way, but it would not be what it is today |
|---|
| 37 | 37 | | without that history; from humble beginnings to becoming one of |
|---|
| 38 | 38 | | the fastest-growing communities in the country, Pearland will |
|---|
| 39 | 39 | | continue its neighborly and warm traditions for generations to |
|---|
| 40 | 40 | | come; now, therefore, be it |
|---|
| 41 | 41 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |
|---|
| 42 | 42 | | Legislature, hereby recognize February 27, 2019, as Pearland Day |

| 43 | 43 | | at the State Capitol and extend to the visiting delegation |

| 44 | 44 | | sincere best wishes for a meaningful and memorable stay |
