55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of Herbert David Kelleher, who died
77 January 3, 2019, at the age of 87; and
88 WHEREAS, Herb Kelleher was a treasured Texas citizen with a
99 larger-than-life personality; he was also a savvy entrepreneur
1010 whose foresight, shrewd business sense, and flair for unique and
1111 engaging marketing strategies helped launch an airline that
1212 revolutionized air travel in the United States; and
1313 WHEREAS, Herb Kelleher was born on March 12, 1931, in
1414 Camden, New Jersey; he graduated from Haddon Heights High School
1515 in Audubon and earned a degree from Wesleyan University, where he
1616 was an Olin Scholar; he earned his law degree from New York
1717 University, and he practiced law on the East Coast for a time
1818 before moving to Texas to establish his own law firm; and
1919 WHEREAS, In 1967, Mr. Kelleher and his client, Rollin King,
2020 created Air Southwest, Incorporated, with the idea of
2121 instituting low-fare airline service within Texas; after a name
2222 change and numerous legal battles, Southwest Airlines began
2323 service on June 18, 1971; Herb served as the company's legal
2424 counsel, and later, as its president, chief executive officer,
2525 and chairman; and
2626 WHEREAS, Due to Herb's vision and leadership, Southwest
2727 Airlines grew from a carrier with only three airplanes to become
2828 one of the largest airlines in the country; by 2008, the airline
2929 operated with a fleet of more than 500 airplanes that completed
3030 more than 3,400 flights each day; between 1972 and 2002, the
3131 company produced the highest return to shareholders of any
3232 company listed in the Standard and Poor's 500 during that
3333 period; and
3434 WHEREAS, Herb Kelleher became the public face of the
3535 airline through his colorful appearances at events and on a
3636 variety of television commercials; he played a major role in
3737 cultivating the company's stimulating and friendly work
3838 environment and was beloved by the airline's employees, and in
3939 1998, Fortune magazine named Southwest Airlines the Best Place to
4040 Work in America; it remains the only airline named to the
4141 magazine's top 10 list of the World's Most Admired Companies; and
4242 WHEREAS, Herb received countless awards over the course of
4343 his career and was inducted into the United States Chamber
4444 Business Leadership Hall of Fame and the National Aviation Hall
4545 of Fame; he stepped down as the airline's president and chief
4646 executive officer in 2001, and he retired as chairman in
4747 2008; and
4848 WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband to his wife of 64 years,
4949 Joan Negley Kelleher, a loving father to his four children,
5050 Michael Kelleher, Ruth Agather, David Kelleher, and the late
5151 Julie Stacey, and a doting grandfather to his nine grandchildren,
5252 and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by
5353 all who were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore,
5454 be it
5555 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
5656 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
5757 family of Herbert David Kelleher; and, be it further
5858 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
5959 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
6060 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
6161 memory of Herb Kelleher.
