5 | 5 | | WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |

6 | 6 | | commemorates the life of Herbert David Kelleher, who died |

7 | 7 | | January 3, 2019, at the age of 87; and |
---|
8 | 8 | | WHEREAS, Herb Kelleher was a treasured Texas citizen with a |
---|
9 | 9 | | larger-than-life personality; he was also a savvy entrepreneur |
---|
10 | 10 | | whose foresight, shrewd business sense, and flair for unique and |
---|
11 | 11 | | engaging marketing strategies helped launch an airline that |
---|
12 | 12 | | revolutionized air travel in the United States; and |
---|
13 | 13 | | WHEREAS, Herb Kelleher was born on March 12, 1931, in |
---|
14 | 14 | | Camden, New Jersey; he graduated from Haddon Heights High School |
---|
15 | 15 | | in Audubon and earned a degree from Wesleyan University, where he |
---|
16 | 16 | | was an Olin Scholar; he earned his law degree from New York |
---|
17 | 17 | | University, and he practiced law on the East Coast for a time |
---|
18 | 18 | | before moving to Texas to establish his own law firm; and |
---|
19 | 19 | | WHEREAS, In 1967, Mr. Kelleher and his client, Rollin King, |
---|
20 | 20 | | created Air Southwest, Incorporated, with the idea of |
---|
21 | 21 | | instituting low-fare airline service within Texas; after a name |
---|
22 | 22 | | change and numerous legal battles, Southwest Airlines began |
---|
23 | 23 | | service on June 18, 1971; Herb served as the company's legal |
---|
24 | 24 | | counsel, and later, as its president, chief executive officer, |
---|
25 | 25 | | and chairman; and |
---|
26 | 26 | | WHEREAS, Due to Herb's vision and leadership, Southwest |
---|
27 | 27 | | Airlines grew from a carrier with only three airplanes to become |
---|
28 | 28 | | one of the largest airlines in the country; by 2008, the airline |
---|
29 | 29 | | operated with a fleet of more than 500 airplanes that completed |
---|
30 | 30 | | more than 3,400 flights each day; between 1972 and 2002, the |
---|
31 | 31 | | company produced the highest return to shareholders of any |
---|
32 | 32 | | company listed in the Standard and Poor's 500 during that |
---|
33 | 33 | | period; and |
---|
34 | 34 | | WHEREAS, Herb Kelleher became the public face of the |
---|
35 | 35 | | airline through his colorful appearances at events and on a |
---|
36 | 36 | | variety of television commercials; he played a major role in |
---|
37 | 37 | | cultivating the company's stimulating and friendly work |
---|
38 | 38 | | environment and was beloved by the airline's employees, and in |
---|
39 | 39 | | 1998, Fortune magazine named Southwest Airlines the Best Place to |
---|
40 | 40 | | Work in America; it remains the only airline named to the |
---|
41 | 41 | | magazine's top 10 list of the World's Most Admired Companies; and |
---|
42 | 42 | | WHEREAS, Herb received countless awards over the course of |
---|
43 | 43 | | his career and was inducted into the United States Chamber |
---|
44 | 44 | | Business Leadership Hall of Fame and the National Aviation Hall |
---|
45 | 45 | | of Fame; he stepped down as the airline's president and chief |
---|
46 | 46 | | executive officer in 2001, and he retired as chairman in |
---|
47 | 47 | | 2008; and |
---|
48 | 48 | | WHEREAS, He was a devoted husband to his wife of 64 years, |
---|
49 | 49 | | Joan Negley Kelleher, a loving father to his four children, |
---|
50 | 50 | | Michael Kelleher, Ruth Agather, David Kelleher, and the late |
---|
51 | 51 | | Julie Stacey, and a doting grandfather to his nine grandchildren, |
---|
52 | 52 | | and he leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by |
---|
53 | 53 | | all who were privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, |
---|

55 | 55 | | RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th |

56 | 56 | | Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved |

57 | 57 | | family of Herbert David Kelleher; and, be it further |

58 | 58 | | RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
