55 WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
66 commemorates the life of John Ingram, a beloved Dallas citizen
77 and pioneering businessman, who passed away on February 16,
88 2019; and
99 WHEREAS, Born April 3, 1934, John Ingram grew up in
1010 Marshall, Texas, where he received his education and developed
1111 aspirations of becoming a successful entrepreneur; he went on to
1212 attend Southwestern Business School in Dallas, and he served with
1313 distinction in the United States Army; and
1414 WHEREAS, John learned the specifics of the formal-wear
1515 business while working for a company in downtown Dallas during a
1616 time when African American citizens could not rent attire from
1717 white-owned formal-wear shops; he opened his first store,
1818 Mr. Formal, in 1961, and he worked multiple jobs while his
1919 business was struggling and growing slowly; over the years, due
2020 to his hard work and commitment, his shop became a highly
2121 successful minority-owned business, and he expanded his business
2222 to nine locations; and
2323 WHEREAS, A man of deep spiritual faith, John Ingram shared
2424 a life of purpose with Joan Ingram, his devoted wife of 49 years;
2525 their seven children, Sabrina, Demetrius, Sharmane, Johnetta,
2626 Larry, Bonita, and Rodney, were a source of pride and joy for him;
2727 John cherished time spent with his many friends and loved ones,
2828 and he enriched the lives of others through his exemplary
2929 strength and courage; and
3030 WHEREAS, An esteemed member of his community, John Ingram
3131 donated both his time and the use of his formal wear to numerous
3232 organizations, and he was a trusted mentor to many young
3333 entrepreneurs; he inspired others through his kindness,
3434 generosity, and determination, and he will long be remembered
3535 with respect and admiration by all who were privileged to share
3636 in his life; now, therefore, be it
3737 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 86th
3838 Legislature, hereby extend sincere condolences to the bereaved
3939 family of John Ingram; and, be it further
4040 RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
4141 his family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
4242 Senate and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
4343 memory of John Ingram.
